Rondo II – For Saint Valentine’s Day

Before I write about the track itself I would like to dedicate this piece to my amazing wife who has constantly inspired me and generally made me a better person. Without you my light of creativity would have been long extinguished and I would have stagnated in the belief that I could never better my art. Thank you for turning my head towards the stars; I will love you eternally…

This piece is an ABACA Rondo that alludes to love in a variety ways. We firstly hear the harp enter with a syncopated rhythm that develops into a driving and dramatic passage marked ‘Appassionato’. which features heavy rubato, a slightly pushed tempo and emotional dynamics. The cello enters as the A section repeats and emphasises many inversions in the harmony as a method of delivering more emotional instability. As the piece develops, love is further alluded to with irregular, impulsive phrase lengths and unstable yet simple harmonies that eventually see the final A section returning as the parallel major of the relative minor of the original key. I hope you enjoy listening!
